Training Services and Classes

The purpose of training is to ensure that staff members are adequately skilled to perform their assigned roles; and additionally, to ensure they have the confidence in their own ability to do so.

  • Executive Overview Training (2-4 Hours)
This training provides senior and middle management with an understanding of the four major components of a typical process improvement initiative from a management perspective: Return On Investment (ROI), basics of process improvement, introduction to the reference model (CMMI), and an introduction to the appraisal method (SCAMPI).  This class is composed of lecture and discussion, and all attendees will receive class materials. This class may be tailored to meet the schedule/time constraints of executives.
  • Practitioner Overview Training (1 Day)
This training provides general technical and support staff with an understanding of the three major components of a typical process improvement initiative from a practitioner perspective: basics of process improvement, introduction to the reference model (CMMI), and introduction to the appraisal method (SCAMPI).  This class is composed of lecture and discussion, and all attendees will receive class materials.
  • Intro to CMMI Class V1.3 DEV, SVCS & ACQ Constellations (3 Days)
This is an SEI recognized formal offering of the 3-day Introduction to CMMI Class V1.3.  The class addresses: Representations, Constellations, Levels, Categories, Process Areas, Goals, Practices, and other components of the model.  This class provides a foundational knowledge base of the CMMI, and is required for all persons who will serve as appraisal team members.  If one of the other Constellation supplements is desired, there will be an additional day required.  This class is composed of lecture, exercises and discussion, and all attendees will receive class materials, exercises, handouts, and texts.
  • High Maturity Training (1 Day)
This is an offering of the SEI’s High Maturity Team Training, suitable for management, practitioners and appraisal team members; and, fulfills the high maturity team training requirement to serve on a High Maturity SCAMPI appraisal.  This class addresses process performance baselines, models and metrics; and their relationship to business-objective focused process improvement.  This class is composed of lecture and discussion, and all attendees will receive class materials.
  • Process Implementation Indicator (PII) Training (1 Day)
In order to create the most favorable conditions for passing a SCAMPI appraisal, it is essential that the organization adequately prepare for the SCAMPI Readiness Review (required component of the SCAMPI Method).  PIIs (SEI recommended) are one of the key artifacts that the appraisal team will use to access the actual appraisal artifacts, both process and project, that will be examined.  PIIs are a set of mapping matrices that identify which specific process elements and project artifacts demonstrate compliance with a particular CMMI practice.  PII development is a non-trivial effort, and this class and recommended consulting ensures that at the end of the effort the PIIs are capable of effectively supporting the conduct of the appraisal. This class provides an overview of PII development and an overview of the pertinent portions of the SCAMPI method to set the context for PII development and to stress the importance of proper PII development.  This class is composed of lecture and discussion, and all attendees will receive class materials.
  • V1.3 Upgrade Training (1 Day)
This training is provided so that those who have already had the predecessor model training (CMMI Intro v1.2 and SCAMPI Team Training v1.2) do not have to repeat the 3-day Intro to CMMI and the 2-day SCAMPI Appraisal Team Training courses.  This 1-day intensive course covers a review of the model and the appraisal method and highlights the differences between the two versions.  This class is composed of lecture and discussion, and all attendees will receive class materials.
  • SCAMPI Appraisal Team Training V1.3 (2 Days)
This is an SEI recognized formal offering of the required course for participation on a SCAMPI Appraisal Team.  This course prepares students to participate effectively on a SCAMPI Appraisal Team and on their assigned mini-team.  All appraisal team members are required to take or have taken this class.  If prospective team members have already taken this class, they will not necessarily be required to repeat it.  Prior attendance will be verified.  The sufficiency of prior training and retention will be verified.  The deliverables for this service are the training slides, exercises and school solutions.
  • In-Depth Process Workshop(s) (2-3 Days)
The purpose of workshops is to provide in-depth investigation of a single/limited aspect of process improvement.  We offer workshops that align with the various components of the CMMI:  levels, categories, process areas, practices, etc.  Workshops are utilized to jump start a particular area of process improvement, or to help overcome an appraisal finding of a significant weakness.  In addition to new working knowledge of a particular process improvement topic, the result of a workshop is typically a new process or work product template that can subsequently be used by the organization and its projects as a template or as leverage for new projects.  Workshops are very interactive and hands-on.
